Mechanism of action

The extract has shown to support the blood glucose management by the virtue of its components to inhibit the activities of key carbohydrate digesting enzymes viz., α-glucosidase, α-amylase, sucrase, maltase, isomaltase and maltase. The components of the plant are also acts on aldose reductase, a key enzyme in carbohydrate metabolism in eyes, to improve the eye health and through maintaining proper osmotic balance in the microvascular blood vessels. The bioactives also have been shown to improve the normal functioning of insulin in the blood stream. The bioactives also helps to improves the general health and damage regeneration ability of pancreas.

An in vitro study revealed that Salaretin® effectively inhibits α-amylase, the enzyme that catalyze the break down of dietary starch to simple sugars, there by potentially inhibiting starch digestion. In this study, the extract was found to inhibit α-amylase in a dose-dependent manner, with 50% inhibition at a concentration of 30 µg/mL.

The α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of Salaretin® was also quantitated in an in vitro study. The extract was found to inhibit α-glucosidase in a dose-dependent manner, with 50% inhibition at a concentration of 7 µg/mL.
